Ally Jacobs and Lisa Campbell (Cathy Cockrell, NewsCenter photo)

Alert action by two members of the UC Berkeley police force played a key role in Wednesday’s arrest of kidnapping suspect Phillip Garrido and the return of Jaycee Lee Dugard, who in 1991 at age 11 was abducted from her South Lake Tahoe neighborhood.

Finally! I’ve been waiting all day to get your names/faces! WELL DONE, kudos, and congratulations for being smart, strong, intuitive women with awesome instincts and great action-taking professional measures. I wrote an e-mail to your supervisors earlier today to that effect. You women ROCK. Thank you for protecting our children and your community, Ally and Lisa.

    Sincerely and with gratitude,

You ladies are absolutely amazing. You took the time to really investigate and address your suspicions. Many others would have just moved on and looked the other way. I wish all persons in positon of authority would be as detailed as the two of you. Your efforts are even more notable when you consider the other opportunities that authorities had to catch these people. Good Luck

Very perceptive police officers and they didn’t even have to knock on a sex offender’s door. Go figure.

Congratulations Lisa and Ally for trusting your gut instincts and professional training. The question that haunts me however is how could have gotten away with this for 11 years? He had a parole officer! Who are we hiring for the most important work in our society? How are we protecting our children? Perhaps this new generation of police professionals will be the answer. Lisa Campell and Ally Jacobs have raised the bar for all police professionals and those who work to protect our children. Thank you!

Congratulation to two smart and quick thinking women. Am I not surprised that it took two women using their intuitive feelings to notice that that something was not right with this man and the two children?
A male parole officer missed the boat, and I wonder if male board of corrections in Nevada decided that a fifty year sentence should be reduced to ten, and thus, a deranged unfixed animal was given a free pass out of jail.

We have been following the story from across the ocean, and have been waiting to hear who those university police officers are, whose quick thinking saved the day. Well done ladies, there are no words to describe how proud we are of you.

A very sad human tragedy which Ally and Lisa brought to an end by doing what we all like to think our police men and women all would do. The story points out that all too often, police men and women don’t what Ally and Lisa did and too many human tragedies end in the worst possible way. Congratulations to you both.

    Very Well Done ! !
Where can I send your gift certificate for a nice dinner on me ?
It appears we have many holes in our Police and Parole Depts.

Perception: the ability to see. Something LOOK wrong ? Investigate.

That the two of you, in a short time saw, what many others overlooked, and cared not to see, is a great credit to you both.
    Again, Well Done.

The two of you truly are heroes! To think about what those three girls went through, not to mention the parents missing their beloved daughter all these years, is absolutely tragic. You acted on your instincts and DID something with amazing results. There are no words to thank you enough. God bless you both.

These women are what all police officers should be: observant, taking notice of who they are interviewing, and checking up on all leads, whether big or small. I wish that the other police officers and probation officers that had the same chances over the last 18 years had at least 70% of these ladies “women’s intuition.”

Congratulations ladies! Thank you for being so observant, listening to your instincts, and following through to rescue so many people from this tragic situation. I felt so bad hearing the step-father say that he had been the prime suspect for 18 years. I hope this family can find happiness and peace, thanks to your efforts. You are an honor to the police force! God bless you!

You guys are great. However, as a criminal defense lawyer I must say please keep your opinions a out these predators mental condition to yourselves. Telling the wold that you think they are “not right” etc gives guys like me the tools to make our job easier. Criminal defense layers will use that to challenge compentancy and sanity to keep themfrom a justly deserved guilty verdict. I hope these defendants rot away the rest of their lives. They don’t deserve to walk among us again. So please keep the public comments to zero.

Just fabulous ladies. By truly looking at what you were seeing and following your instincts you have given a valuable lesson not just to other police officers, but to all people about taking some kind of action when you think something is wrong – even if you cant put your finger right on it.

    Totally awesome.

We all owe you a deep debt of gratitude for the amazing work you did here. You both took time to CARE and follow the trail. Your suspicions were right on the money. You are more than just astute professionals. You are truly HEROES. Well done. You restore a bit of faith in humanity that gets taken away every time we are exposed to terrible crimes such as these.

Male cops would not as likely have noticed these things…. Great work officers!

  36. August 31st, 2009 at 11:34 | #36

I’m amazed and like the outpouring of love for these officers.

At the same time, I don’t want to speak for them but my sense from some of what they’ve said is that it wasn’t some magical super-power, extra-special, or over-and-above-the-call-of-duty stuff they did. In other words, afford them some humility. Remember they have to live with their fellow officers for many years to come.

They’re both pretty young looking with long careers in front of them. It’d be a trap to single them out too much or define them in terms of this (obviously quite good) work. It’s definitely a trap to chalk the whole thing up to “women’s intuition” which is a kind of anti-feminist counterpoint to what they actually did. (What they did that is so feminist is take the young girls seriously rather than presuming legitimate custodianship – but men can do that too, just as easily – and women can screw that up just as easily.)

thank you for all the wonderful traits that you used in your two bodies to help another. your love for human rights and life already showed in the type of work you do. may all the angels in heaven blow their horns for you two fine people. i know God will shine his light on ya’ll even more so than he already has. i believe we all have a purpose on this earth and i am so graitful that ya’lls was to bring peace back into this world of 3 innocent little girls and their families. i love you and your families and will pray for ya’ll too. thanks for all you have done and will continue to do.

Officers – most people don’t set out to be heroes but circumstances come their way and they step up to the plate as needed. I am sure the day you became involved in this tragedy was a day like any other but YOU both cared enough to get involved and follow up on a situation that left unsettled you. Others may have had the chance before to help, but you two got involved. Your smarts and professionalism as law enforcement and your human concern for others came together and helped to save the lives of those little girls and their poor mother from a terrible fate and future. You are an inspiration to all of us. God bless you and your families and just keep up the fantastic work!!

If there is a place to send a thank you gift then please give it. We get so used to folks not really acting on instincts to follow through and here comes someone who gets an instinct, does the necessary spade work before reacting and does what was needed.
