Berkeley Tweets

August 27th, 2009

Overheard today on Twitter:

I just asked the lady @ the Berkeley bread workshop if they make their own bread…WOW I need to lay off the ganja!

Amethyst clouds and silver diamond lights reflect the moonrise on Berkeley Hills houses. A fog bank hovers above the pine and cypress trees.

The best thing about getting lost, is finding your way through it and getting there. I Love Berkeley.

Overheard while walking the dog – two young people flirting on street corner, discussing Balkan politics. Only in #Berkeley o_O

“How Berkeley Can You Be” meatloaf: grass-fed hamburger ($8 per lb!) with some organic flax meal snuck in.

Before I forget: there are crazy homeless people in Berkeley who will point at people and repeat: “You’re a Jap! You’re a Jap!”

@ Berkeley farmers market. overheard some1 says global warming is a military issue- soon we’d be seeing tanks rolling down our streets. Huh?

I like how Berkeley dining halls are not “all you can eat” but “all you care to eat.”

First class ever taken at Berkeley: an entire course on Lolita. Grinned like an idiot through the whole first hour.

If there isn’t some sort of protest on the Berkeley campus, then you know something is very very wrong!!

Went up to the hills behind the stadium for my last Berkeley sunset. Has to be the damned prettiest place I’ve ever lived.

Alert UC Berkeley police lead to girl missing from Tahoe for 18 years

August 27th, 2009

UC Berkeley police on Wednesday spotted Phillip Craig Garrido, 58, a registered sex offender, with two young girls, and notified his parole officer.  The parole agent then brought Garrido to his Concord office later the same day for questioning.  Accompanying Girrado to his interview were his wife, the two girls spotted by UC Berkeley police and another unknown woman.

During the questioning session, the parole agent called on Concord police to help identify the unknown woman. Authorities soon learned that it was Jaycee Lee Dugard, who went missing from her South Lake Tahoe home 18 years ago, and that Garrido had kidnapped her.

A better front yard

One of the pleasures of walking around Berkeley is the high number of beautiful and intriguing gardens. I’m particularly impressed, however, with the project that’s ripening just around the corner from my house. On Russell Street in the Elmwood one of my neighbors decided last year to dig up her neat, pretty front garden and plant vegetables.

She’s out there regularly, tending to her tomatoes, squash and broccoli. I’m sure it’s good exercise, and she’s about to harvest some wonderful bounty. We definitely need to dig up our water-hungry grass and do something similarly inspiring.

Berkeley dance group Ishaara gets bounced from “America’s Got Talent”

August 27th, 2009

We’re down to 20 semifinalists on “America’s Got Talent.” Unfortunately, Ishaara isn’t among them.

The dazzling Bollywood dance group from UC Berkeley reached the end of the line last night when it was eliminated from contention in the results show.

Where is Berkeley’s patio by the lake?

August 27th, 2009

In Madison, where I went to grad school in the late 70s, on a sunny summer afternoon, hundreds of people would congregate on the Memorial Union Terrace between the student union and Lake Mendota.

We’d spend hours there, drinking coffee and beer, reading, playing cards, enjoying the company of others. Meetings were both planned and serendipitous. We’d introduce friends to other friends, and parties would form, bike rides, LTRs, even families.

Berkeley doesn’t have a lake, but it does have a culture like Madison. Do we have a place like Madison’s Lake Mendota patio? If so where is it? If we don’t, why don’t we?
