Berkeley Rep: 42 years and counting

June 29th, 2009

As reported in BroadwayWorld.com, the Berkeley Repertory Theatre has elected influential local leaders to guide its 42nd season:

This month, at the annual meeting for Berkeley Repertory Theatre, influential leaders from the Bay Area’s top firms signed on to guide the Tony Award-winning nonprofit through its 42nd season. The board of trustees elected new members and a slate of officers to steer the Theatre during a year of daring shows, which includes the latest work from the nation’s top artists.

Hmmm. I love the Rep and think it’s a great local institution. But that BroadwayWorld.com report was really using the language of public relations, not news. I suspect every non-profit in the world calls its trustees “influential leaders”.

After 20 years in the PR business, I’ve come to understand how often editors are either grossly overworked or just plain lazy and publish press releases essentially verbatim. It’s the only business I know of where plagiarism is highly encouraged.
