Berkeley’s Downtown, the three-star restaurant on the corner of Shattuck and Addison, is closing for a while over the summer. According to Eater SF:

Downtown has decided to shutter for the months of July and August. We’re told that the restaurant is planning on coming back for the fall semester, but there’s a chance that, in the meantime, there will be a remodel… The specific shutter date is still up in the air, but the strongest possibility is that Downtown’s summer vacation will commence on the last weekend of June. Kindly adjust your schedules.

Downtown, opened in 2001 by alums of Chez Panisse and Bay Wolf, is a favorite haunt of theater and concert-goers — and they usually do a grand job getting their French-influenced dishes to you in time for curtains up.

They shoot movies, don’t they?

We hear from Sylvia Paull that a movie crew was out on Solano Avenue yesterday — just below Santa Fe and the Albany/Berkeley border.

Paull reports that the movie being shot is called Stitch in Time, and it will be submitted at the next Sundance Film Festival. Paull has also spotted the film crew at the Safeway Drugstore on Ramona.

So now we want to know more. Could this possibly be a remake of the British film of the same name made in 1963 and starring comic Norman Wisdom? We imagine not.

And might the shoot venture further into Berkeley next? If you have inside info, let us know.

And, while on the subject of shoots, watch out for Parenthood, an NBC TV series (based on the Steve Martin movie) that is currently being filmed in Berkeley and Rockridge. The cast photograph on the show’s website (shown above) was taken at the intersection of The Uplands and Plaza Drive in Berkeley’s Claremont ‘hood.
